We didn’t set out to build an email provider. We set out because we kept hitting the same wall, and eventually got tired of it.
The choice nobody should have to make
We spend our days building software for European businesses — the kind of small companies that run their whole operation out of a mailbox. Over and over, the same conversation happened. They wanted mail that was private and European: their data under EU law, not scanned for ads, not quietly feeding someone’s model. And they wanted mail that was modern: search that works, an assistant that helps, the ability to plug in the AI tools everyone else gets.
And they couldn’t have both.
The privacy-first providers were honest and European, but frozen in time — some of them actively block the standards and AI integrations that make email useful today. The intelligent, convenient providers were fast and clever, but funded by advertising, hosted under US jurisdiction, and built to keep your data exactly where you can’t take it back. You picked your compromise and lived with it.
That’s a bad choice, and it’s getting worse — because the AI wave is making “modern” mean a lot more, and the sovereignty wave is making “European” matter to people who never thought about it before. Both are pulling harder, in opposite directions, on the same inbox.
Why we think we can fix it
Fixing this properly means owning the whole thing — the mail server, not just a skin over someone else’s. So that’s what we did. Lettio runs on our own mail infrastructure, on our own servers in the European Union, on open standards from the ground up.
That control is what lets us do the part nobody else has put together:
- Private and European, without apology — EU jurisdiction, encrypted in transit and at rest, no ads, never used to train a model.
- Genuinely open — IMAP, SMTP, JMAP, your own domain, a one-click export. Your mail is yours to leave with, always.
- Actually intelligent — a native connection to AI assistants and agents over the open Model Context Protocol, so your inbox can finally keep up, under the same privacy guarantees as the mail itself.
No competitor holds all four. That gap is the whole reason Lettio exists.
The part we refuse to lie about
Because this is a privacy product, one thing matters more than any feature: telling the truth about it.
So we’ll say the uncomfortable part plainly. Lettio is not a zero-access, end-to-end system where “not even we can read your mail.” It can’t be — the assistant, the search and the agents have to work on your mail, which means our servers can read it, the same as any provider that offers those things. Pretending otherwise would be exactly the kind of overclaiming we’re tired of.
What we promise instead is real and defensible: your mailbox in Europe, under the GDPR, never exploited, on standards you can walk away with, with hard limits on what any agent can do in your name. We’d rather earn your trust with what’s true than win it with a slogan we can’t stand behind.
We’re building it now
Lettio is early. We’re building in the open, one honest piece at a time, and we’d rather have the right people with us from the start than launch loud to an empty room.
If you’ve ever felt that choice — private or intelligent, European or modern — and thought it shouldn’t have to be a choice, you’re exactly who we’re building this for.
